  • Geothermal heating and cooling systems use the earth’s natural temperature to heat your home instead of generating heat with electricity or gas. Soil or water underground retains heat, compared to above-ground air, which fluctuates. Geothermal heating uses underground loops to pull out the existing underground heat and conduct it to your property’s geothermal heat pump, while geothermal cooling removes the heat already inside.

    • Horizontal closed loop - An extensive system of pipes filled with liquid and buried underground horizontally. This method takes up more yard space but is easier to install since it does not require as deep of a dig.
    • Vertical closed loop - This system consists of extensive pipes filled with liquid and buried underground vertically. This method takes up less yard space but requires deep holes, usually dug by a good drill.
    • Open loop - Instead of pulling heat from the ground, this system uses the natural warmth of underground water. Rather than liquid filling closed pipes, they are open to groundwater, allowing it to flow through the pipes and conduct heat.
    • Pond/lake - This is a type of open loop system utilizing water from a pond or lake on your property instead of the underground water layer.
