Reminder to Switch Your Fan Direction

Ceiling fan
Stay cool in the summer heat without maxing-out your electric bill - don’t forget to switch the direction of your ceiling fan blades. Why does it matter which ‘spin’ your fan is in?

The direction your ceiling fan rotates effects its cooling capabilities

Moving a ceiling fan direction switch up or down to change the fan’s rotational direction alters the flow of air within a room. Do you know which way to set a fan?

  • Keep things cool
Counter-clockwise circulation of fan blades in the summer pushes cool air down to the floor, producing a wind chill effect on the skin and making a room feel up to 8 degrees colder to those underneath. Ceiling fans also help your air conditioner, reducing the need for constant central or window air conditioning. Simply incorporating the use of ceiling fans can allow you to save up to 40% on cooling costs. Ceiling fans can also extend outdoor opportunities, keeping temperatures comfortable and pesky insects at bay.
  • Nice and cozy
Clockwise winter rotation at low speeds gently pulls air upward, pushing warm air near the ceiling back down from where it has risen to warm occupied areas when temperatures dip.

How do you change the direction of a ceiling fan?

Most fans feature a switch on the motor housing (the part below the blades). Simply wait for the fan blades to stop rotating on their own, then flip the switch to change direction. Once you flip the switch, simply verify the correct rotation – from the top left, then down to the right (counter-clockwise, for the summer). You should feel the air movement. When you’re done, don’t forget to adjust your thermostat for optimal savings.

What about fans without a switch?

If you’re wondering how to change ceiling fan direction without switch, your fan may operate by remote control or wall switch. If either of these is the case, the remote or wall panel should include a reverse button. Remote missing in action? You’ll need to pick a new remote from the manufacturer, or a universal ceiling fan remote from your local home improvement store, following manufacturer instructions for reprogramming.

Don’t forget!

You’ll need to change the direction again in the fall or winter (back to clockwise rotation). To remind yourself, pop a note onto the family calendar – or set a reminder on your smartphone or mobile device ‘to-do list.’
